DOT grant to Lancaster’s RRTA will help lessen America’s dependence on oil and create green jobs.

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey today announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded the Red Rose Transit Authority (RRTA) $2.45 million in economic recovery funding to pursue environmental technologies.

“I am pleased to see the stimulus funds at work for Lancaster’s Red Rose Transit Authority,” Senator Specter said.  “Energy improvements are an important investment that will substantially reduce RRTA’s energy costs, as well as help lead to a safer, cleaner environment.”
"I am glad that the Red Rose Transit Authority has been awarded this funding through the Economic Recovery Act," said Senator Casey. "This project will not only help reduce dependence on foreign oil and promote greater energy efficiency, but should also help create jobs and promote economic growth in Lancaster County."

RRTA’s proposal was among 43 projects selected nationwide in the competition for $100 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) funds for groups that are pursuing cutting-edge environmental technologies to help reduce global warming, lessen America's dependence on oil and create green jobs.

Red Rose Transit Authority will use the $2.45 million grant to add energy improvements to the planned upgrade of Red Rose Transit's main operations facility in Lancaster.  Energy improvements include geothermal for heating and air conditioning, skylights and light tubes to reduce lighting fixture needs, solar panels on all available roof surfaces to produce electricity, a green roof on the new office addition, two waste oil burners to heat the vehicle storage building using waste oil generated by RRTA from the vehicle fleet, and energy efficient fixtures throughout the facility.
