911th Airlift Wing to benefit from new living quarters for Airmen
WASHINGTON, DC- U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey today announced that the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee has approved $12.4 million in federal funding for the Air Reserve Base in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The funding is contained in the Fiscal Year 2010 Military Construction Appropriations Bill.
The $12.4 million will cover the demolition of two outdated Visiting Airmen Quarters and the construction of a new 3-story, 60-room Visiting Quarters facility to support members of the 911th Airlift Wing, which includes approximately 1,220 Air Force Reservists and 320 civilians. The existing lodging facilities, build of wood in 1952, do not meet current space, fire protection, or force protection standards and drain the maintenance budget by requiring excessive repairs.
“I am pleased that my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee have recognized the value of this project,” said Senator Specter. “The construction of a new living facility will support our reserve military forces in the 911th Airlift Wing and the brave men and women who serve our country.”
“This funding is great news for Pennsylvania and is long overdue for the reserve and civilian members of the 911th Airlift Wing,” Senator Casey said. “With this support, our brave servicemen and women will be provided the safe housing quarters they deserve.”
The bill must be approved by the full Senate, the House of Representatives and signed into law by the President before funding is final.
