Funding will encourage regional energy efficiency, stimulate job growth

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senators Arlen Specter and Bob Casey today announced that the Department of Energy awarded $14,108,700 to Greenworks Philadelphia through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG).

“I am pleased to see recovery funding put toward a program like Greenworks Philadelphia,” said Senator Specter.  “These energy efficiency upgrades will reduce Pennsylvania’s carbon footprint, provide consumers with relief on their energy bills and stimulate the Philadelphia economy.”

“Greenworks Philadelphia is a great model of how energy efficiency can reduce costs, create new jobs in next generation industries and protect the environment,” said Senator Casey. “By investing in projects like these, we encourage cities and regions across the country to institute similar programs, thereby becoming a more sustainable and innovative America.”

Philadelphia was one of 6 major U.S. cities to receive a share of nearly $93 million in funding for energy efficiency projects announced today.  These projects will work to create cleaner, more environmentally sustainable cities while providing job growth nationwide.

Philadelphia Greenworks is an innovative sustainability strategy which has been implemented by Mayor Nutter.   Funding will promote energy efficiency in sectors such as transportation, waste management, and provide for up-t0-date building restoration. EECBG funds will also support a set of grant programs in the city, including competitive matching grants to small businesses to incentivize the private sector to pursue energy efficient retrofits and funding to help commercialize nascent technologies and develop the infrastructure to support next-generation energy technologies.
