Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the National Security Working Group and former Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South and Central Asian Affairs, released a statement on the current debate at the United Nations regarding a resolution aimed at Israel.
“I strongly urge Ambassador Power and the United States delegation to the United Nations to veto the resolution introduced by the Egyptian delegation before the UN Security Council this week if it comes to a vote, or any other one-sided resolution against Israel that may be offered in the coming days and weeks. Longstanding U.S. policy has been to stand with Israel against attempts to use the United Nations to internationalize the peace process, and that policy should be maintained. The best path to peace is direct talks between the parties, and resolutions like the one offered at the Security Council this week have the potential to move peace further from our reach.
The international community, the Palestinians, and the Israelis all have a responsibility to avoid actions that make it harder to get to negotiations and potentially undermine the path to a sustainable two-state solution. I am concerned that some delegations to the United Nations continue to advance counterproductive resolutions such as the one introduced this week, while they turn a blind eye to international crises that should demand our immediate attention and action, including the conflict in Syria and Russian aggression in Ukraine.”
